Sue Munchrath Obituary
Lafayette - Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Mother of the Church in Lafayette for Mrs. Sue Munchrath, age 95, who passed away on Friday, April 3, 2026, at her residence in Lafayette.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Location on Monday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until time of services. A Rosary will be prayed on Monday at 6:30 PM by the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Entombment will be held in St. John Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum - Lafayette.
Reverend F. Hampton Davis will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and officiate the services, con-celebrated by the Reverend Cedric Sonnier.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 73 years, Marvin Munchrath; her children, Greg and his wife, Alison Brewster Munchrath of The Woodlands, TX, have two children, Eric Anthony Munchrath (wife, Candice Neal) of Cypress, TX and Katherine Munchrath of New York City. They have two grandsons, Tyler and Austin Munchrath; Dwight and his wife, Jill Listi Munchrath, have three children, Victoria M. Ditch (husband, Ashton Ditch), J. Conner Munchrath (wife, Riley Reynolds), and J. Carter Munchrath. They have one grandson, Mack Munchrath. All of their family live in Lafayette, LA; Laurie, (her late husband, Henry W. Pfeffer, Jr) have three children, Dr. Arielle P. Garzotto (husband, PJ Garzotto), H. Wagner Pfeffer, III (wife, Victoria Gaspard), and Harrison W. Pfeffer. They have three grandsons, Deacon Garzotto, Brooks Garzotto, and Winston Pfeffer. All of their family live in Lafayette, LA; and one sister in law, Carolyn Smirl Bryan of Rockwall, TX.
Born January 5, 1931 in Rockwall, TX to John Albert Bryan and Dona Cobb Bryan. She had two brothers, John A. Bryan, Jr. (wife, Doris) and Thomas C. Bryan (wife, Carolyn Smirl Bryan). She graduated from Rockwall High School as Valedictorian, a cheerleader, and class favorite. Sue attended Baylor University in 1948-1949 on academic scholarship. In 1949, she went to work for the Federal Reserve Bank for seven years. In April of 1952, she met recently discharged marine, Marvin A. Munchrath, at a dance & he became the love of her life. They married on May 29, 1953, and on May 23, 1954 gave birth to their first son, Gregory Alan Munchrath. In 1956 they moved to Lafayette, LA, and in 1959 gave birth to their second son, Dwight Anthony Munchrath. In December of 1962 their daughter was born, Laurie Ann Munchrath.
During her time in Lafayette, Sue joined the Newcomers Club, and became President of several clubs including Chez Amis, Birdwatchers, and Geological Auxiliary. She also served on the board of St. Thomas More High School, Crime Stoppers, and St. Mary's Catholic Church Parish Council two times. She worked in a resource room with the visually impaired at Alleman School. Sue and Marvin taught 7th and 8th grade Junior Cotillion for 4 years.
Sue was raised up in the Baptist church but joined the Catholic church when her children were young. She taught CCD in her home for many years. She was asked to be in the very first group of Eucharistic Ministers in the Diocese of Lafayette where she served at St. Mary's Church. She was the Diocesan Representative for the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem for 23 years. Sue was selected Queen of the Bishop's Charity Ball, as well as the 6th Queen of the Krewe of Victoria. The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem awarded her the Silver Palm for her long service, and the Catholic Diocese of Lake Charles awarded her the Pro Deo et Pontifico Award for her service to people outside this area for the Catholic Church and mankind.
While President of Chez Amis, she entered a Vogue Sewing Contest and won for her club at the regional level in Lafayette, Abbeville and New Iberia. She then won the state competition for Louisiana and finally placed 2nd in the USA when submitted to judges in New York.
While raising her family, she went back to college at USL graduating Magna Cum Laude in Psychology in 1981. While doing this, she took care of her mother in her home 6-7 months each year.
Sue and Marvin have traveled to many places in the USA, including Hawaii, plus countries of China, Japan, Mexico, Canada, England, Scotland, France, Monaco, the Holy Land, Greece and touched Germany.
At 95 plus & married for almost 73 years, she and Marvin said, "What a ride!" Marvin says Sue is the Best and this is an unbiased opinion!
Pallbearers will be Eric Munchrath, Conner Munchrath, Carter Munchrath, Ashton Ditch, Wagner Pfeffer, Harrison Pfeffer and P.J. Garzotto.
The Munchrath Family would like to recognize the extraordinary care given Sue by her caretakers throughout her illness.
Memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Sue Munchrath's name to Hospice of Acadiana, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Tunnel to Towers or the Carmelite Monastery.
