Richard Paul Morelan Obituary

Richard Paul Morelan, fondly known as Paul, passed away peacefully on Jan. 16, 2025 in Rockwall, Texas, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born on Sept. 28, 1947 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Florence Stark Effinger and Ott Morelan, Paul's journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit, generous heart and enduring love for his family and friends. Hiw early years were spent in the company of his loving family, including his step-father Roy Effinger and his siblings.

Paul was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother, Gary Morelan.

Paul's legacy continues through his devoted wife, Sandy Morelan, whom he married on April 4, 1987 in Arlington, Texas. Together, they raised four sons - Elliot, Matt, David, and Jake Morelan - who blessed them with grandchildren Jack, Andrew, Yari, and Yaden Morelan. Paul is also survived by his sister, Linda Cannon (Tim), brother, Roy Dale Effinger (Ardery), sister-in-law, Kim Sartain (Robbie), brother-in-law, Ed McKee (Peggy), and many loving nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him deeply.

Paul's entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate several successful businesses throughout his life. He was the proud owner of Texas Steak Ranch and Huckleberry's Restaurant in Houston, Texas, as well as Southern Junction Nightclub and Steakhouse in Rockwall, Texas, and Texas Star Nightclub in Greenville, Texas. His establishments were not just businesses, but gathering places where people could savor great food, enjoy live entertainment and dance the night away. His passion for creating spaces where joy and community thrived earned him the Citizen of the Year award in 2007 from the Rockwall Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to his business ventures, Paul served in the National Guard reserves in Houston from 1974 to 1975, demonstrating his commitment to his country and community. His dedication to service was a testament to his character and his desire to make a positive impact on the world around him.

Paul's interests extended beyond his professional achievements. He loved trading stocks and forex, an activity that not only engaged his analytical mind but also brought him great pleasure. He was also known for his green thumb, often found working in the yard, creating beautiful spaces for his family to enjoy. Traveling to "The Cabin" in Hoodsport, Washington, provided Paul with a sanctuary where he could relax and revel in the tranquility of nature.

Above all, Paul will be remembered for his kindness, his infectious laugh and his ability to light up a room with his presence. He was a man who created a successful life, not just for himself but for all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His commitment to his family, his businesses and his community left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.

As we say goodbye to Paul, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a journey filled with love, laughter and countless memories. His spirit will forever be cherished, and his legacy will live on through the lives of those he loved and the community he helped build.

May he rest in peace, knowing that his time on earth was well spent and that he was dearly loved.

Paul's life will be honored in a Celebration of Life at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Reflections at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Rockwall, Texas, surrounded by his family and close friends. His memory will continue to be a guiding light for all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
