Mrs. Joyce M. Dyll Obituary
Rockwall, Texas - Joyce Margery Dyll (née Andrews), aged 96, passed away peacefully at her home on April 8 after a dignified, months-long stand against cancer. Born in Port Huron, Michigan, on January 15, 1930—during a blizzard—to Ferris Andrews and Sarah Andrews (née Christie), she grew up in Michigan and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts, at a time when higher education for women was still a rarity.
Following graduation, she crossed the Atlantic by ocean liner to London and spent the summer cycling through Europe with a dear friend. She then joined the workforce as an accountant in banking, which afforded her the opportunity to live in Denver and San Diego. Seventeen years after college, an old boyfriend reached out to rekindle their romance. She graciously entertained his straightforward request, found in him the love of her life, and moved to Dallas in 1968 to elope—though the Justice of the Peace who performed the ceremony reportedly questioned whether it could truly be considered an elopement given the couple's "mature" age.
Without delay, they began a family in Rockwall, Texas, in 1970, where they built their "hacienda del lago" home and raised three children, hosting a lifetime of holiday gatherings. She remained in Rockwall for the next 56 years, becoming a deeply rooted presence in her community. Over the years, she served as a Cub Scout den mother, a National Charity League volunteer, a long-standing PTA volunteer, a member of the Friends of the Rockwall Library, and a longtime Women's League member. She was also a devout member of First Presbyterian Church of Rockwall and later enjoyed taking part in a book club. Alongside these roles, she embraced the many unofficial duties of motherhood—carpool driver for soccer, basketball, T-ball, and baseball; drill team, piano, and sorority mom; swim team volunteer—the list goes on. Later in life, she spent summers in Montana and cherished her time as a doting grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Louis M. Dyll. She is survived by her son Edward Dyll, his wife Bronwen, and their daughter Sophia of Addison; her son Michael Dyll, his wife Remi, and their sons Russell and Martin of Houston; and her daughter Katherine Seale, her husband John Henry, and their children Henry and Ellender of Dallas.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church, 602 White Hills, Rockwall, Texas.
For those who wish, donations may be made to the Rockwall County Library or Helping Hands of Rockwall. She will be remembered for her fiercely independent nature, her quick wit, and her warmth—along with a natural charm that made her instantly well-liked by all who met her.
