Wanda Maye Rogers, 92, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away Aug. 14, 2016.
She was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Abilene, Texas, to Duffy John Richardson and V.U. (Welch) Richardson. Wanda was raised with a middle class American childhood. Her father was a barber by trade and operated his own barber shop, while her mother was a homemaker.
Wanda earned a degree in education from Abilene Christian University. She began her teaching career in Winters, Texas, where she met Innis Wayne Rogers. They were married in 1947, following a short engagement and made Winters their home. In 1949 Wanda gave birth to their only child, Michael Wayne Rogers. Two years later in 1951, Wanda and Wayne purchased the Western Auto in Rockwall and promptly relocated their young family to what was — at the time — a small, rural community. Wanda was not only a full-time mother and homemaker during those years, but also stayed actively involved in the family business. In 1959 Wanda began teaching in Rockwall and continued her teaching career with the Rockwall ISD until her retirement in 1983. She took great pride in her role within Rockwall's education system. After retiring, Wanda continued her support of the family business which had developed into Rogers and Rogers Ace Hardware. She devoted many years developing the store's growth and footprint within the community.
Wanda was raised in the Church of Christ and was a member of the Rockwall Church of Christ until her health made it difficult to attend services.
She is survived by her only son, Michael Wayne Rogers and wife Rella; grandson Ari Rogers; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Quida Nichols; five nephews and their spouses, children and grandchildren; and numerous first cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Innis Wayne Rogers; daughter-in-law Lou Ann Rogers; a grandson, Ricky Lynn Rogers; sister Dora Templeton; brother J.D. Richardson and nephew Jimmie Templeton.
Her funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at M.L. Jones Chapel of First Baptist Church, 610 S. Goliad St., Rockwall, 75087, with Rev. Cheryl Taylor officiating.
The family received friends at Rest Haven Funeral Home - Rockwall Chapel Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Rogers family appreciates everyone's friendship, encouragement and prayers. These are the greatest gifts. Honoring Wanda's life with cards, flowers or memorial contributions to The Texas Scottish Rite Children's Hospital would please her.
