Thomas's Story

Thomas Timothy Miles, 75, of Rockwall passed from this world to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, leaving a large hole in the hearts of his family and friends. 
He was born Sept. 20, 1940, to Victor and Alberta (Arvin) Miles in Terre Haute, Ind. In 1958 Tom graduated from Paul Schulte High School and in 1963 from Indiana State University with a bachelor of science in education, a master’s of science in education in 1969, and an advanced degree in education in 1970. Tom earned his Ph.D. in educational media from the University of Iowa in 1973. He joined the U.S. Navy and served three years active duty during the Vietnam War and 20 years in the Navy Reserves, retiring with the rank of commander.
Starting during his middle school years, Tom delivered papers in Terre Haute, continuing through his college years. He also worked at the local TV station as a camera operator and director. Tom’s work included teaching fifth grade students in Indianapolis, Ind., and working for Boeing Aerospace in Philadelphia, Pa. He taught broadcast media at The University of Akron, Ohio, for 24 years where he earned the rank of associate professor emeritus. While at The University of Akron, he taught in the School of Communications and was inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in Ohio. In his spare time, he sold cars and real estate. In 1975, Tom was accepted as a Kentucky Colonel and continued to support their mission. He currently was a member of the Transformation Anglican Church in Rockwall and had served on the parish council at St. Matthias Catholic Church in Rockwall. Tom loved cruising and traveling with his wife, Pat; his doggies; his cars and trucks; playing golf; shopping online; and watching TV and movies. He was a master negotiator and always got the best deal. His generosity was shared by all his family and many friends.
Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia E. (Linder) Miles; his daughter, Deborah O’Brien and husband Joseph with four grandchildren in Wadsworth, Ohio; two brothers, Steven Miles and wife Deborah of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Charles Miles and wife Cecilia of El Dorado Hills, Calif; stepson Robert Bazzoli and wife Margaret of Uniontown, Ohio; stepdaughter Barbara Bazzoli Daily and husband Todd of Powell, Ohio; stepdaughter Donna Sterling and husband Dennis of Worthington, Ohio; eight stepgrandchildren; two nieces and one nephew. Tom is also survived by his aunts, Bernice Bullock of Loogootee, Ind., and Ruth O’Banion of Carmel, Ind. 
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Craig V. Miles.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Jan. 21, 2016, at Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rockwall Chapel with Fr. Don McClain officiating.
