Ted Watkins, recently of San Marcos, died Sept. 8, 2013, following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 2, 1938, in Kaufman County to DW. and Iva Watkins. A 1957 graduate of Rockwall High School, Ted married Betty Dobbs on May 30, 1959. A bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Texas in 1961 was followed by masters and doctoral degrees in social work from Louisiana State University in 1963 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. Ted’s life and career demonstrate his heartfelt love of people and dedication to service. His more than 30 years of teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington and Texas State University were grounded in practical counseling experience in both public and private settings, and extended by his roles as author, administrator, father, and mentor. Ted’s limitless capacity for enjoyment showed in his grin and laugh. He loved good conversations and bad puns. Ted also loved and took comfort in playing old hymns on the piano, which he shared and passed on by playing for small churches both as a teenager and near the end of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons Scott, Brett and James; granddaughter Jessica and her mother, Dawn Watkins; brother David and wife Nancy Watkins; brother-in-law Robert High; nieces and nephews Dan High, Nancy Ballman, Jennifer Watkins, Shirah Winicur, and Laura Ping; and great-nieces and nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held in San Marcos at the UMC Wesley near the Texas State campus on Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 14, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rockwall Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity.
