Shirley Jane Belew

Shirley Jane Belew, 91, of Rockwall, Texas went to be with the Lord Dec. 14, 2018. She was born on July 25, 1927 in Houston, Texas. She was a 1943 graduate of Lamar H.S. in Houston and 1947 graduate of Texas State College for Women (now TWU). It was in Denton, Texas where she met the love of her life, Charles R. Belew, while he was attending North Texas State Teacher's College after completing his Army commission in Europe under General G.S. Patton during WWII. They were married in August 1950 and moved to the Rio Grande Valley where they began their teaching careers at P-SJ-A ISD in Pharr, Texas until their retirement in 1984. Their passion for teaching (Texas History and Industrial Arts) and developing young men and women through the years was rewarded by the never ending visits from former students coming by their home to reminisce and express thanks for the life lessons learned while in their classes.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Jack and Nan (Lockert) Hall, her husband of 42 years, Charles R. Belew and her sister Jackie and her husband Harold E. Turner Sr. She is survived by her son, Craig Belew and his wife, Nancy of Rockwall, Texas, grandson Chris Belew and his fiancée Brittany Brunt of Texas City, Texas, granddaughter Lisa (Belew) Gill and her husband Jordan of San Antonio, Texas, great grandson Russell Owen Gill of San Antonio, Texas and cousin Barbara and her husband Bill Young of Houston, Texas. In the 21 years Shirley lived in Rockwall, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and her favorite scripture passage was Psalm 23. She was a pillar of love to her family and friends leaving a legacy of wonderful memories that will be forever cherished. Shirley was truly blessed to have had three caregivers be such an important part of her life.
Much love and thanks to Martha Lundy, Adriana Gutierrez and Belen Rivera for their unconditional love and support given to her over the many years, and much appreciation to Dr. Les Sandknop, Dr. Srinivas Gunukula, Dr. Steve Arze and the Broadmoor Medical Lodge therapy and nursing staff for their exceptional care.
A family graveside service will be held at a later date at Valley Memorial Gardens, Mission, Texas. The family asks that in lieu of flowers a memorial donation be directed to the charity of your choice.
