Ralph Daniel Hedstrom, 98, of College Station, Texas, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 17, 2015.
He was born Oct. 27, 1916, on the family’s Angus cattle ranch near Burdick, Kan., to Swedish immigrant Emil Emanuel Hedstrom and Ida Charlotte Holscher Hedstrom. Ralph was baptized on March 4, 1917, by Pastor A.J. Borgstrom and confirmed June 7, 1931, at Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick, Kan., by Pastor C.A. Julius. He graduated from Burdick High School in 1935 and then completed an extra year of graduate work. Ralph was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, College Station.
In 1938 he traveled to the state of Washington and later moved to Redding, Calif., where he worked as a pipe welder on Shasta Dam. He moved to Vallejo, Calif., and worked at Mare Island shipyards repairing damaged destroyers and submarines during World War II. In 1949 he settled in Chico, Calif., and became a WearEver salesman for the Alcoa Aluminum Company, serving 24 years. Later he acquired his real estate broker’s license in Chico where he resided for 54 years and where he attended Redeemer Lutheran Church which he helped to build. He was honored in Chico to have a street named after him called, “Hedstrom Way.”
He recently celebrated his 73rd wedding anniversary, having married on May 3, 1942, in Berkeley, Calif., to Phyllis Lorna Muehlenburg of White City, Kan. The Lord blessed the union with two children, Roger Francis and Patricia Elaine.
Ralph enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling in their motor home. After moving to Rockwall, Texas, in 2003 to be near his daughter, he spent time making more than 50 replicates of his parents’ 1902 wooden windmill, along with three sets of his two-story childhood farm home, barn, garage and outbuildings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Fredrick Emanuel, Carl Francis, Clarence Samuel and Lloyd Benjamin; one sister, Hazel Ruth Ulrich; and a son, Rev. Roger Francis Hedstrom in 2008.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hedstrom of College Station; daughter Patricia and spouse Gilbert Reed Lemons of College Station; four grandchildren and their spouses, Richard and Casey Lemons of College Station, Andrei and Sherry Hedstrom of Ferndale, Calif., Rye Lemons of Arroyo Seco, N.M., and Christina Hedstrom of Angelica, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Riley Elaine Lemons, Porter Reed Lemons, Allie Kathleen Lemons of College Station and Raine Fisher Hedstrom of Ferndale, Calif.; and multiple nieces and nephews.
A memorial interment service will be held at Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick, Kan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a ministerial scholarship fund at Concordia University, Austin, Texas, through Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3001 Horizon Road, Rockwall, Texas 75032.
