Michael's Story

On Thursday, Oct. 21, 2016, Michael Guy Shaw went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle against cancer.
He was born Dec. 21, 1956, in Dallas, Texas, to James Murdock Shaw Jr., and Frances Ruth (Miller) Shaw. Mike was raised in Dallas and graduated from Kimball High School, Class of 1975. He then earned a bachelor's in business administration from the University of Texas in Arlington.
Mike married Lisa Joplin in 1985 and moved to DeSoto, Texas, where they raised their three daughters until moving to Rockwall in 1996. On June 2, 1986, Mike began his career at DART. He worked in the Rail Program Development-Real Estate division and was DART's chief appraiser. During Mike's 30 years at DART, he was instrumental in the development and success of the light rail system. He was also a graduate of the first Leadership DART class and a mentor in the Management at DART program. In addition, Mike was a community volunteer member for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children. He thoroughly loved his job and considered his co-workers his second family.
In 2004 Mike's oldest daughter, Jessica, was killed in an automobile accident. She was a four-year starter on the Rockwall High School volleyball team, where she earned numerous awards and honors. The volleyball team hosts a memorial tournament every year in her honor and presents an annual Jessica Shaw Award and Scholarship for Leadership, Friendship and Loyalty at the end of each season. Mike would attend and help sponsor the tournament each year, which brought him a lot of joy. At the end of each school year, he would present the award to the recipient of the scholarship which was something he always looked forward to.
Mike had a strong faith in God and spent most of his free time serving others, cheering on his daughters at their sporting events, spoiling his granddaughter and attending classic rock concerts. He was passionate about nutrition and fitness, and his favorite place to be was the beach. Mike loved taking his family on vacation to Galveston, Texas, nearly every summer. Mike will always be remembered as a loving father and Poppa, a man with a sincere heart who was hardworking and loyal to his friends and family.
He is survived by his children, Samantha Ivey and husband Luke and Stephanie Shaw, all of Rockwall; granddaughter Harper Ivey; sister Patricia Barclay and husband William of Aledo, Texas; brother James M. Shaw III of Dallas; and niece and nephew Jennifer Barclay and William F. Barclay.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Jessica Shaw.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at First Baptist Church, 610 S. Goliad St., Rockwall, with Pastor Paul McDill officiating. Interment followed in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
The family received friends Thursday at Rest Haven Funeral Home - Rockwall Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials in Mike's name can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services at PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202 or www.lls.org.
