Melva Jane (Block) Schwertner, 98, of Rockwall, Texas, since 1991, previously of San Angelo, Texas, passed away April 7, 2017.
She was born March 20, 1919, in Olfen, Texas, to Bruno and Janie (Ernst) Block. Melva married the love of her life, Raymond Schwertner, on Feb. 28, 1938, in Rowena, Texas. She was a farm wife and homemaker and later worked as a quality control technician at Ethicon, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary for 20 years before retiring. She loved dancing, traveling, camping and gardening. Melva was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall. She enjoyed serving others by volunteering for an assortment of activities, including Lake Pointe Hospital. Melva also adored playing "88" dominoes and cards with her family and friends.
Melva is survived by her son, Ray Schwertner and wife Sheila of Rockwall; grandsons Jared Schwertner and wife Tara of Mesquite, Texas, and Jordan Schwertner of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter Lacy Schwertner of Dallas; great-grandchildren Ethan and Emmalin; and a host of brothers- and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 72 years, Raymond Schwertner; daughter Jenise M. Schwertner; and brothers Sylvester and Bobby Block.
Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Rest Haven Funeral Home - Rockwall Chapel with Pastor Jesse Crouch officiating. Interment followed in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
The family received friends Sunday afternoon at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m., with a Rosary at 3:30 p.m.
