Mary Ruby Vercher, 88, of Heath, Texas, passed away April 5, 2016.
She was born July 15, 1927, in Houston, Texas, to Bobby and Ruby May Hughes, and spent a large portion of her adult life in San Antonio. For the last 12 years, she resided in Heath with her daughter and family.
Mary loved people well — her community, her friends and her family. Full of spunk, warmth, and selflessly blind to the idea of inconvenience, she rarely met a stranger. Her friends spanned from the staff at her favorite restaurants to members of her church. She was a light to everyone who had the privilege of meeting her.
In addition to her community, she set aside a special love for her family — her daughter, Liz, whom she loved with all her heart; her son-in-law, Mark, whom she always bragged about to others; and her two grandchildren, Lauren and Aaron.
The only thing exceeding her love for family and friends, was her love
for Jesus Christ — she placed Him above all else. Her reliance and constant communication with Him was her driving force and the source of everything she stood for. She was a prayer warrior who was put on this Earth to spread His good news. One way she spread the gospel was handing out "Jesus Calling" books. She always had one on hand to give to those she felt could benefit from it.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Schleyer and husband Mark; her granddaughter, Lauren Schleyer; and grandson Aaron Schleyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband James Louis Vercher.
Her funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at First Baptist Church in Rockwall, 610 Goliad Street, Rockwall, 75087, with Pastor Steve Swofford officiating.
Resthaven Funeral Home — Rockwall Chapel was in charge of arrangments.
