JOYCE's Story

Text size

Joyce L. Downard, 86, of Bentonville, Ark., passed away June 3, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers, Ark.
She was born April 30, 1928, in Galveston, the daughter of Fred and Wilda Mae Lange.
Having lived most of her life in Texas, Joyce gave generously of herself, caring for her family and loved ones. In recent years she moved several times with family for ministry, and in each place she made very close friends and was loved by all who knew her. She was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, and as described in James 1:22, was a doer of the word, not a hearer only.
She loved life and had many favorites, including John Wayne, Billy Graham, working jigsaw puzzles, playing games, and gospel music. She understood the power of the written word, and spent much time writing encouraging cards and letters to friends and family. She was the most extravagantly generous, and consistently grateful person we have ever known, and truly began a legacy of faith that still exists several generations forward. Our mom and “Mimi” lives on in our hearts and lives.
Joyce is survived by three children, sons Sandy Downard of Rockwall and Tom Downard and wife Wendy of Dallas; her daughter, Diane Higgins and husband Dick of Fayetteville, Ark.; her granddaughters, Angela (Kristy) Caldwell and husband Mark and their two children, Justin and Megan, and Rachel Turner; and grandson Michael Turner and wife Brittany (with another great-grandbaby on the way). We are all so very grateful to have had her in our lives and look forward to one day being reunited with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Doris; her brother, Marvin,; and her husband, William.
A life celebration will be held at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall, Texas in the chapel on June 27 at 10 a.m., followed by lunch at the church.
