John Ridings McLaughlin, 90, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully March 14, 2017.
He was born April 18, 1926, in Clayton, N.M., the youngest of four sons, to John Henry and Clara Elizabeth (Priddy) McLaughlin. A longtime resident of Rockwall County, Mr. McLaughlin lived primarily in the DFW Metroplex for the last 50 years after living various other parts of Texas prior to that. He graduated from Sweetwater High School and then received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Hardin-Simmons University in 1947. Mr. McLaughlin then earned two master's degrees from Southwestern Theological Seminary in music education and religious studies. A talented vocalist and musician, he worked on staff at several churches across Texas. Finally, he became a church services consultant; he worked supporting Spanish speaking churches throughout Texas for the Baptist General Convention of Texas. An avid reader, Mr. McLaughlin enjoyed singing, playing the piano, traveling, speaking Spanish and telling jokes, but what he enjoyed most was his love of sailing. He would often ask most anyone he met to come out for a ride on his sailboat, La Movida (his "second love" in Spanish). He was a member of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas.
Mr. McLaughlin is survived by sons Weldon McLaughlin and wife Jane of Flower Mound, Texas, and Travis McLaughlin and wife Sharon of Dallas; daughter Kellye McLaughlin of Rockwall; 10 grandchildren, Paige Stevenson, John McLaughlin, Valerie Crabtree, Sie McLaughlin, Adrienne Mageors, Meredith, Allie, Kendall and Holden Magee and Jillian Brim; 13 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law Bill C. Wallace of Knoxville, Tenn.; along with many nieces and nephews and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Moveta McLaughlin in 2011; brothers Howard, Glenn and Charles McLaughlin; and sister Ellen Ruth McLaughlin.

Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas 75243. The family received friends Thursday evening at Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rockwall Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. and again Friday at the church prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in the name of John Ridings McLaughlin to the George A.
