James Martin Maris, 75, of Rockwall passed away Sept. 5, 2011.
He was born Oct. 10, 1935, in Lucein, Okla., to James Wilbur and Katharine (Freeman) Maris. Mr. Maris graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, Kan., and obtained his bachelor of science degree from Kansas State University in 1959. After receiving his degree, Mr. Maris worked for Texaco, then for GlaxoSmithKline for more than 20 years. In later years he was a substitute teacher at Rockwall Christian Academy. An avid snow skier, he also enjoyed traveling and tennis and loved basketball, making sure he always attended the Big 12 Basketball Championship each year. Mr. Maris was a member of the Dallas Ski Club, the T Bar M Racquet Club and Chisholm Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, as well as church treasurer.
Mr. Maris is survived by his wife, Penny Maris of Rockwall; sons Mark Maris and wife Karen of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Brad Maris of Vail, Colo.; daughters Kim Bullock and husband Colby of Carthage, Wendy Harvey and husband Justin of Austin, and Ashley Tippit and husband John of Rockwall; sisters Nancy Potter and husband Kaye of Garden City, Kan., Eleanor Young and husband Bill of Lyons, Kan., Katharine Cundith of San Antonio; brothers Robert Maris and wife Gizella of Kansas City, Kan., David Maris and wife Carol of Wichita, Kan., and Steven Maris and wife Mary of Lone Star; and eight grandchildren, Megan, Taylor, Kelsey, Bailey, Dylan, Grayson, Avery and Kylie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Russell Maris.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 10, 2011, at Chisholm Baptist Church, 1388 S. State Highway 205, Rockwall, 75032 with Pastor Rocky Weatherford, Ty Davenport and Bryan Davenport officiating. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Decatur. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
