Dorothy's Story

Text size

Dorothy Nell Futrell Peoples was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Forney. She was raised on the Futrell farm in Heath where they grew and sold cotton. She was so good at math that her daddy had her weighing and selling the cotton and keeping the family books at an early age. She attended Heath elementary schools and graduated from Forney High School in 1939.
During WWII she trained as a Red Cross volunteer nurse at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas and was then deployed to Ft. Sill, Okla., to care for wounded soldiers. For her service, she is included in the Women in Military Service Memorial in Washington, D.C. She then began a career in Rockwall working for the State of Texas in temporary quarters as the “new” Rockwall County Courthouse was being built.
After the war, she married Wilfred Lee, “Teany,” Peoples and had four children; Frederick Lee, Suzanne, Cynthia and Joseph Russell, who were all raised in Rockwall. She continued working for the State of Texas in the Department of Human Resources, where she retired after 30 years of service. She attended both the Heath and Rockwall Baptist churches over the years. She was a member of the Rockwall Historical Society, and her favorite pastime was shopping and reading. When she couldn’t drive to Town East Mall anymore, she began shopping online. At the age of 89, in June of 2012, she moved to Fredericksburg to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She began taking the Austin American Statesman daily and the Rockwall Herald-Banner and Fredericksburg Standard weekly. She worked the crossword puzzles and generally had a couple of good books going at the same time. She also enjoyed playing bingo and dominoes in the assisted-living facility where she lived, but in January of 2015, she got the flu and then suffered secondary issues causing her health and interests to fail.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Wiley and Lois Mabel Futrell; sisters Emily Faye Futrell, Toinette Kidd, Amedrith Peck and Allegra Bell Chapman; brothers Weldon and James Lowe Futrell, and a son, Joseph Russell Peoples.
She is survived by a son, Fred Peoples of Dallas; daughter Suzanne Peoples of Austin and Cindy and son-in-law Marc Bennett of Fredericksburg; grandson James Canup of Austin; granddaughter Audrey and husband Joseph Saldana of Dallas; three great-grandchildren, Regan, Liliana and Jameson Saldana of Dallas; and one sister, Ava Norred of Katy.
Services will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at 2 p.m., at Rest Haven Funeral Home — Rockwall Chapel, with interment immediately following in the Rest Haven Memorial Park.
The family will have a reception following at the Hilton Rockwall Lakeside.
